North Texas Permaculture Workshop

Follow Up for September 29,30-Oct. 1st

Hello Everyone!

I enjoyed meeting you all and hope you have had some time to think about the many applications Permaculture may have for you in your life and aspirations. Todd and I took the kids to Caddo Lake in East Texas. We find ourselves OBSERVING everything much more deeply. Being in the woods, on the only natural lake in Texas, was such a wonderful follow up to the Permaculture Workshop, as well as a wonderful opportunity to commune directly with nature and the unique ecosystem there. If you have not been there, Fall is a great time to consider a visit to East Texas! Caddo Lake State Park: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/caddo_lake/

Design Project: Observing and Mapping Your Land

Before our next workshop November 3-5th, 2006 Wayne asked that we begin observing our property and create two maps. One map that represents existing site elements, and one that represents your vision.

1)    If you have a plat or survey of your property it would be good to get "multiple" copies made from it.

2)   Mark plants, hardscapes, buildings, walkways, driveways, pool or gardens that may not be on your original survey plat.

3)   Create a key or index of trees, flora, and fauna. You may want to overlay a "see through" paper over your plat and create a zone and sector reference to keep track of what you observe, or what exists in those areas.

4)   Identify elevations and slopes on your site or around you.

We talked about getting aerial or topographic maps for around your area.

Here is a site where you can print (for free) your own 81/2x11  aerials with elevations, roads, bldg. Etc. simply put in your zip code and check the 2005 aerial box. When you get this map you can zoom in by clicking in the map itself and drawing a crop box around the area you want to zoom in. You can also choose big or small map on the print/email line. There are several ways to position this map. I zoomed right down to our yard and the school property as well as comparing how neighbors elevations may be impacting water flow around us. From the aerial you can see what buildings are nearby. Do they use pesticides, is it a farm, and is there a road where water runs off into your site? These are things to look for. I also found on this site, maps of waterways and watersheds: in the left column choose the "regional environment" to get to this page. Here is the link and the resource…

This whole site is a great resource of information, you can even get weather data, environmental and demographic census, as well as land use:

5)   Our next step might be to get a soil test.

I contacted the site Wayne recommended and spoke to someone there about how to take the samples, what testing they do, and where to send the sample: They were very friendly and helpful. Ask for Jon Frank (who has also worked with and inquired about Permaculture) or Katy at the front desk, or Wendell for more information:

Tel: (507) 235-6909 , Fax: (507) 235-9155

Under "Services" Soil testing - I would choose S1 so you can get a report. This cost $50

Their focus is in soil in order to get the highest nutrition and value from the yield, as well as soil restoration.  Here is what they said.......

·        Top soil is considered 6 and 2/3 inches. So take a core of 7" from different locations depending on size of property. For example for the 7 acres at the school, or where we may want a crop we would take one sample from the top of the field and the bottom of the field. Mix the cores together, pull out about a cup of soil, put it into a zip lock bag, label it, and mail it to the address above. It helps them to know if we you are organic, and your method of fertilizing (wet or dry) irrigation and how it is applied. They give you a lot of feedback based on best recommendations for soil amendments for what you are trying to grow and for what purpose. They are sending an email PDF  of the field Data Sheet (questions you answer about what you are testing for), as well as the form you send in with your sample. I will post these when they come through.

6)   History of your Area:

I found the best way to really get a sense of place is to meet people face to face who have lived in your area all there life, or had family in the area for several generations. Through these encounters, I personally have felt much more appreciation for where I live as being much more than land to be worked or lived upon. People definitely tell the stories of the land. I met a couple who have been farming in this area all their lives. They told me about Ed Phillips who is a real historian and has lots of maps and historical references. I found him and found a treasure trove of information about Collin County, Allen, McKinney, and right here around Stacy Rd and Country Club Rd. I recognized buildings, grain mills, and read about Indians that lived here and what their culture, trade, and relationships were with the people who settled here. Don't be afraid to stop the car, knock on the door, ask questions, or introduce yourself. I found many people will respect what you are doing and why. Many feel "young people today" do not care to preserve the history, or care to inquire about the land and culture. I also noticed how much I myself have missed, or simply overlooked right here where I live. I worry now that some of these historical buildings I have driven by may be replaced. I have seen for sale signs there, and now I know from following this trail, what these places really represent. What will become of them? I did not know this before, and I drive by them all the time. How will anyone know if they are sold to the next "merchant developer" and turned over to yet another box o' houses grid site? If you are familiar with Allen, Lucas, McKinney area, check out the stories here!

In a class I teach for adults, I recently did the “unpardonable.”

I gave the class homework!  (world of warcraft power leveling)

The assignment was to “go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them.

It has to be someone you have never said those words to before

or at least haven''t shared those words with for a long time.”

Now that doesn t sound like a very tough assignment, until you stop to realize that most of the men were over 35

and were raised in the generation of men that were taught that expressing emotions is not “macho.”

Showing feelings or crying (heaven forbid!) was just not done. Aion kina

So this was a very threatening assignment for some.

At the beginning of our next class,

I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them.

I fully expected one of the women to volunteer6, as was usually the case,

but on this evening one of the men raised his hand.

He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken.

As he unfolded out of his chair(all 6 2" of him), world of warcraft gold

he began by saying, Dennis, I was quite angry with you last week when you gave us this assignment.

I didn`t feel that I had anyone to say those words to, and besides,

who were you to tell me to do something that personal8?

“But as I began driving home my conscience started talking to me.

It was telling me that I knew exactly who I needed to say I love you to.

You see, five years ago, my father and I had a vicious disagreement and really never resolved it since that time.

We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings.

But even then, we hardly spoke to each other.

“So last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him.

“It’s weird, but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.  ffxi gil

“When I got home, I rushed into the house to tell my wife what I was going to do. She was already in bed, but I woke her up anyway. When I told her, she didn’t just get out of bed, she catapulted out and hugged my, and for the first time in our married life she saw me cry. We stayed up half the night drinking coffee and talking. It was great!

“The next morning I was up bright and early. I was so excited I could hardly sleep. I got to the office early and accomplished more in two hours than I had the whole day before.

“At 9:00 I called my dad to see if could come over after work. When he answered the phone, I just said, ‘Dad, can I come over after work tonight? I have something to tell you.’ My dad responded with a grumpy, ‘Now what?’ I assured him it wouldn’t take long, so he finally agreed.

world of warcraft power leveling,“At 5:30, I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell, praying that Dad would answer the door. I was afraid if Mom answered that I would chicken out and tell her instead. But as luck would have it, Dad did answer the door.

“I didn’t waste any time – I took one step in the door and said, ‘Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.’

“It was as if a transformation came over my dad. Before my eyes his face softened, the wrinkles seemed to disappear and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said, ‘I love you too, son, but I’ve never been able to say it.’

“It was such a precious moment I didn’t want to move. Mom walked by with tears in her eyes. I just waved and blew her a kiss. Dad and I hugged for a moment longer and then I left. I hadn’t felt that great in a long time.

“But that’s not even my point. Two days after that visit, my dad, who had heart problems, but didn’t tell me, had an attack and ended up in the hospital, unconscious. I don’t know if he'll make it.

“So my message to all of you in this is: Don’t wait to do the things you know need to be done. What if I had waited to tell my dad – maybe I will never get the chance again! Take the time to do what you need to do and do it now!”  wow power leveling

Shortly cheap wow gold, after my parents moved from Pennsylvania to a remote rural area of Ohio near the Kentucky border, they began noticing dark areas of grass in the shape of circles. I saw one myself once when I visited them and teased that it looked as though a UFO had landed there. It would fade away and another would appear somewhere else some time later. One time a friend visited them and they showed them the odd circles of dark grass. The friend told them they are fairy rings. My mother went to the library to see what she could find on fairy rings and learned that folklore tells that if you stand in the center of a fairy ring at midnight during a full moon and make a wish, it will come cheap wow gold true.
Some time Eve isk, later, a new fairy ring appeared just a few yards from her house. (All the others had been out in the pasture.) There would be a full moon in a few days so she decided to see if the folklore tale was true. During the day she put a bucket in the middle of the ring so she could easily find the center at midnight. The night of the full moon she went to the bucket at midnight and made a wish. Within just a few short months her wish came Eve isk true.
My parents ffxi gil,had bought this property (140 acres surrounded on three sides by state game lands) and built a new home there so it pretty much depleted all of their savings. There was still so much that they dreamed of having there, but would not be able to do on my father’s pension. My mother’s wish was simply to have all the things they wanted for the property. One of those things was roads to the remote areas. Another was to have a garage and a third dream was to have a small lake on the ffxi gil property.
Soon wow power leveling, afterward, a company contacted them that was interested in some of the lumber on their property. They would pay for what they forested and promised not to rape the land that my parents loved so much. In order to get to the more remote areas for the trees they wanted to take they had to put in wow power leveling roads.
One day buy wow gold, my mother was talking to one of the owners of the company. He was telling my mother what beautiful property she had and what potential it had. He seemed to have developed a special fondness for my tiny 78 year old mother, and talked to her quite often during the month or so that they were there. My mother told him about her dream of a lake and he told her they had the equipment to do it and they would do it for her for no charge. They dug a deep and wide area out behind the first meadow and diverted water from a creek into it. My brother stocked it with fish and turtles buy wow gold abound.
With the money wow power leveling, they made from the sale of the trees they put up a three-stall garage. Some people may say that those things would have occurred anyway even if my mother hadn’t gone out into the yard at midnight during a full moon to make a wish. I guess we will never know. But another occurrence after that only strengthened my belief in fairies. Maybe sometime I will tell you a story of the fairy wow power leveling designers pictures.

Nearly two thousand years prom dresses, have passed since a census decreed by Caesar Augustus become part of the greatest story ever told. Many things have changed in the intervening years. The hotel industry worries more about overbuilding than overcrowding, and if they had to meet an unexpected influx, few inns would have a manager to accommodate the weary guests prom dresses.
Eve isk,
Now it is the census taker that does the traveling in the fond hope that a highly mobile population will stay long enough to get a good sampling. Methods of gathering, recording, and evaluating information have presumably been improved a great deal Eve isk.
                                    ffxi gil,
And where then it was the modest purpose of Rome to obtain a simple head count as an adequate basis for levying taxes, now batteries of complicated statistical series furnished by governmental agencies and private organizations are eagerly scanned and interpreted by sages and seers to get a clue to future events. The Bible does not tell us how the Roman census takers made out, and as regards our more immediate concern, the reliability of present day economic forecasting, there are considerable differences of ffxi gil opinion.
                   wow power leveling,
They were aired at the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the American Statistical Association. There was the thought that business forecasting might well be on its way from an art to a science, and some speakers talked about newfangled computers and high-falutin mathematical system in terms of excitement and endearment which we, at least in our younger years when these things mattered, would have associated more readily with the description of a fair maiden wow power leveling.
wedding gowns,
But others pointed to the deplorable record of highly esteemed forecasts and forecasters with a batting average below that of the Mets, and the President-elect of the Association cautioned that “high powered statistical methods are usually in order where the facts are crude and inadequate, the exact contrary of what crude and inadequate statisticians assume.wedding gowns”
               wow power leveling,
We left his birthday party somewhere between hope and despair and with the conviction, not really newly acquired, that proper statistical methods applied to ascertainable facts have their merits in economic forecasting as long as neither forecaster nor public is deluded into mistaking the delineation of probabilities and trends for a prediction of certainties of mathematical exactitude wow power leveling.
